Hand Tufted Rugs

Hand tufted rugs are semi-handmade in that a device called a “tufting gun” is used. Hand tufted rugs can be made with wool, silk or man-made fibers and are made much like hand hooked rugs, except that the loops are sheared to create a flat surface pile. The tufting gun is a hand operated tool that punches strands of wool into a canvas stretched on a frame. Then latex glue is applied to the back of the rug to hold the tufts in place.

The rug maker then applies a secondary foundation, which is then covered by a third final cloth backing. The final step is shearing the tops of the looped tufts to create the pile. Some hand tufted rugs feature a combination of cut and looped pile, yielding a three dimensional effect.
